| Bruin later became called Martinsburg. Martha (Sober) Ashbaugh recalls the family tradition that the immigrant Sanderson "fiddled his way over", i.e., played the violin for pay or barter. Evidence that this may actually be true was found in a query posted by Caroline FitzPierce on 5 Sept 1998, at http://www.pa-roots.com/armstrong/query/query015.html#3569: "Is anyone reseraching the SANDERSON family in Armstrong Co? Reuben Sanderson, 1873-1950's worked/managed/owned a livery stable in Karns City. Who were his parents? Family legend says that the 'first' Sanderson came from Europe as a young boy, after persuading a ship's captain to bring him because he could dance, whistle, and entertain the other passengers. While on board, a gentleman took him under his care and upon arriving in Philadelphia, the boy took his benefactor's name of Sanderson. Great story but is there any truth to it?" Perhaps Jacob's parents were the Henry and Margaret Sanderson who in June 1820 sold a farm in Donegall Twp, Butler Co, Pa, to a John McCollough. Nora told her children that Jacob (her grandfather) walked 3 miles to town the week before he died.7 May have had a brother George who died 1859. Solomon Pontius admr.
