| Another source has birth as 5 Feb 1804.26 Lived in Hempfield Twp at time of marriage of dau Sophia.26 ... Captain John Smail, who was born February 15, 1804, in Hempfield township, son of Peter and Sophia Smail, natives of Northampton county, who emigrated to Westmoreland near the close of the last century. He was a farmer by occupation, and derived his title of captain from his election to that position in the "Brush Creek Militia."
