David Altman, eldest child of William Altman, resided in Hempfield township, Westmoreland county, four miles west of Greensburg, where he farmed all his life. He was a member of the Lutheran church, and a Democrat in politics. He married Susanna Riggle, from Virginia, of Scotch ancestry, by whom he had nine children: Abraham A., born 1794, died a bachelor, April 15, 1888; John, married Mary McCrady, issue, one child, deceased. Christian, mentioned hereinafter. William J., born April 5, 1798, died November 28, 1877. He married Annie Catherine Zundel, who died July 8, 1884, aged seventy-four years. Their children were: Leah, Hannah. Salome, deceased; John, Mary, Barbara, deceased; and Uriah, deceased. One son served in the Civil war, was wounded and returned home. Jacob, who married Elizabeth Bender, issue: Joseph, deceased; Abraham, deceased; Benjamin, deceased; Sarah, deceased; Albert, Oliver, William, and Mary. Four sons served in the Civil war, one of whom was killed. Daniel, born 1812, died 1891. He married Mary Miller, born 1813, died 1901, issue: Cyrus, Daniel, Simon, Mary, Ellen, Charlotte--all deceased--Alpheus and Susan. One son served in the Civil war. Mary, married Henry Meliron, issue: David, Simon, and Susanna, all deceased. Mrs. Meliron died February 21, 1854, aged sixty-two years. David, died in early life. Susanna, died in early life. David A1tman, father of these nine children, died November 30, 1857, in his ninetieth year, and his wife, Susanna Altman, died October 3, 1867, aged ninety-two years. Their longevity was inherited by some of their descendants.16 |
