| Surname may be spelled Buschin some records,109 and Busch in others.108 A "Revolutionary War Veteran" marker is beside his tombstone, which says he died "in the 86th year of his age"13, which probably means he was born between 3 Feb 1750 and 1 Feb 1751. Another source gives his parents as Christian Busch & Maria Elizabeth <unknown>.56 1802 Hempfield Twp tax list has a Daniel Bush assessed for 302 acres, 3 horses & 4 cows. ================ D. Bush Deposition- Mailed care of John Armstrong, Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., Pa-Pension file No. S.23559 [John Armstrong was prob. his lawyer] State of Pennsylvania Westmoreland County ss(?) On this 13th day of January 1834 personally appeared in open court before the judges or the court of Common Pleas of said County or Westmoreland, now sitting. Daniel Bush of Hempfield Township in said County, aged 84 years, who being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of congress passed 7th June 1832,- That he entered the service of the United States in the year 1777, at which time he resided in the county of Northampton in this state, he was drafted as a Militia man and served in a company commanded by Captain Roberts, declarant marched with said company to the Jerseys but cannot remember the name of the place where they were stationed, but recollects very well of seeing General Washington there nearly all the time he was on duty, declarant served a tour of two months duty in the Jerseys, and received a discharge from Captain Roberts, (Captain John Roberts, Northampton County, 1st Battalion 5th Company, inactive duty, Militia), which I have since lost, or mislaid. In 1778 I moved to Westmoreland County, and in the Summer of that year I enlisted in a company of militia commanded by Captain Truby, (Captain Christopher Truby, b. 1736, d. 2/1802, Captain, 8th Co. 2nd Battalion, Westmoreland County, PA ), and was marched from Hannah's Town in said county to a place called Fort Wallace (Blairsville, PA) on the banks of the Conemaugh river, where I served a tour of two months duty. I also received a discharge from Captain Truby which is lost. Again in the Spring of 1779, I was drafted in the same company, commanded by Captain Truby, and marched from Hannah's town to a place called Fort Hand (Apollo, PA), at that time under the command of Colonel Painter, here I served a tour of two months duty, and again in the Spring of 1780 I was drafted in said company, commanded by said Captain Truby, and served a tour of two months duty at a place called Fort Crawford (Fort William Crawford, named for the Colonel who was captured by the Indians and the renegade Simon Girty, and tortured unimaginably with Girty supposedly sitting by and smiling. When, after several hours, Crawford pleaded for Girty to shoot him, Girty is reported to have smiled and said "But William, I have no gun". Girty and Crawford had been close friends before the war. Crawford died after several more hours of torment. Fort Crawford was near New Kensington, PA, which is where my draft board was located) situate on the banks of the Allegheny River, but did not receive any discharge that declarant can recollect now. Declarant states that the company to which he belonged were principally employed at the above mentioned stations, in scouting and spying after the Indians and guarding the frontier settlements. Declarant never was in any battle-has no documentary evidence of his services, & stated that Christian Iseman (Eisamen) can testify to his services as a soldier of the revolution, and whose deposition accompanies this declaration. Declarant claims a pension for eight months service as above stated, and hereby relinquish every claim to a pension or annuity except the present, and declare that my name is not on the pension roll of the Agency of any state. To the following interrogatories propounded by the court declarant answers as follows- 1st Where & in what year were you born? Ans. I was born in Germany at a place called Budelich in the year 1750. 2nd Have you any record of your age Ans. I have a record of my age on paper which was given to me by my parents and now produce it in court. 3rd Where were you living when called into the service of the United States-where have you lived since the Revolution and where do you live now? Ans. This is embodied in my declaration. 4th How were you called into the service Ans. This is stated above. 5th State the names of some of the regular officers who were with the troops where you served. Such Continental and Militia regiments as you can recollect , and the general circumstances of your services. Ans. My memory is so far failed that I am now unable to state nay other names or circumstances than those mentioned in the foregoing declaration. 6th Did you ever receive a discharge? Ans. The answer to this interrogatory is embodied in my declaration. 7th State the names of persons to whom you are known in your immediate neighborhood, who can certify to your veracity and good behavior. Declarant names Simon Drum Esq., Jack Welty, Peter Baum (Daniel's brother-in-law), Christian Iseman , Conrad Shuey, the Rev. Mr. Hackey. Sworn and Subscribed the day & year aforesaid. Attest (Randal McLaughlin, Prothonotary) Daniel Bush (Mark) State of Pennsylvania Westmoreland County SS (Daniel apparently couldn't write, at least in English) We Nicholas P. Hackey, a clergyman residing in the borough of Greensburg in said county (Hackey was a Reformed church preacher, and was one of seven pastors officiating at the dedication of the Delmont Salem church, 9/27/1850. This first building was shared by Lutheran and Reformed. The current Lutheran Church building was built in 1868) and Simon Drum Esquire of the same place hereby certify that we are well acquainted with Daniel Bush who has subscribed and sworn to the foregoing declaration, that we believe him to be about 84 years of age that he is reputed and believed in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a soldier of the revolution, & that we concur in that opinion. Sworn & subscribed in open court The 13th day of January 1836 (Nicolas P. Hacke) (Simon Drum) Attest (Randal McLaughlin, Prothonotary) Westmoreland County SS Christian Iseman of Hempfield Township in said county came into open court the 13th day of January 1834 and being duly sworn according to law deposeth that he was well acquainted with Daniel Bush the above declarant in 1778, that said Daniel enlisted , or was drafted in a company of militia commanded by Captain Truby, and served I tour of two months duty at a place called Fort Wallace in the Summer of said year, and that in the Summer of 1779 the said Daniel Bush was again drafted in said company commanded by Capt. Truby and served a tour of two months at Fort Hand and again in the year 1780 the said Daniel & this deponent were drafted and served a tour of two months each in Captain Truby's company at Fort Crawford on the banks of the Allegheny River. Sworn and subscribed in open court The day and year aforesaid (Christian Eiseman) Attest (Randal McLaughlin, Prothonotary) And the said court do hereby declare their opinion, after the investigation of the matter, and after putting the interrogatories prescribed by the war department, that the above named applicant was a Revolutionary soldier, and served as he stated. And the court further certifies, that it appears to them that Nicolas P. Hackey, who has signed the preceding certificate is a clergyman resident in the Borough of Greensburgh, and that Simon Drum who has also signed the same is a resident in the same Borough, and is a credible person, and also that Christian Iseman who has sworn to and subscribed the above deposition as to the services of Daniel Bush, is a credible person, and that their statements are entitled to credit.
