In 1870 she came from Germany with her father, sisters and brother, and settled in Chicago. Died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Stebner.23 Ship records show she actually arrived in America 14 May 1872,12 and that is the year recorded in the 1900 census.30
Ten children--8 living in June 1900.30
We have a postcard she mailed 27 Feb 1920 to her sister Mrs. Chas. Gust in Riga, saying "Lieber Schuester, Ich wünsche dir ein gesunda geburtsäg und noch fille [viele] mehr von Bertha." We translated this (with help by A. Keyser) as "Dear sister, I wish you a happy birthday and many more." Matilda died about 7 months later. |
