| Notes for John (Spouse 1) |
William Clarke & John Strong "came over on the same ship and settled in the same town. Both were special friends of Mr. [Cotton] Mather."21 Believed to have come first to America in 1630, the returned soon to England where he married and had two children before again emigrating to America in 1635. After staying about a year in Dorchester he moved in 1636 to Windsor, Conn., then to Taunton by 1638 and to Northampton in 1659.20 Trumbull provides an extensive biographical sketch.21
Another source has him coming to America on the "Mary & John" in 1630 and settling in Dorchester. On 18 May 1631 he was admitted as a freeman and held various offices in Dorchester in 1633, 1635 & 1636. He removed to Windsor by 1637 and to Northampton by 1672.23 Consistent with this, Beers has him born in Taunton, England, in 1605 and coming to America in 1630 "in the company under Rev. John Wareham."22 |
