Thomas played an important role in the "War for the Relief of Uncas." Uncas, a chief of the Mohegan tribe, was a valuable asset to the colonists in Connecticut, and in 1645 he was involved in a tribal war with a competing group of Indians. During at least on seige on Uncas, Thomas lead a party of colonists to his relief.98

Shortly after 1700 Thomas built and operated the Leffingwell Inn, a "house of public entertainment." The house still stands at 348 Washington Street and has been proclaimed the oldest in Norwich. Some historians say this Inn was built onto the original home of Stephen Backus.98
