| Notes for Robert (Spouse 1) |
| Came to America in 1632 on the Lyon, arriving 16 September. Presumably settled first in Cambridge. Moved to Hartford, Conn., by 1639 and to Northampton in 1656.23 He was one of the eight original settlers of Northampton, with his home lot on what was then known as Bartlett Street (named in his honor; name later changed to Pleasant Street). Although he was Northampton's first constable, in 1656 he was charged with having "committed a misdemeanor." The result of the investigation is not recorded, but it did not affect his position in the community for the next year he was chosen one of the townsmen. He was killed during an attack on Northampton by Indians in the hostilities known as King Philip's War.21 |
