John Talcott came to Hartford from Braintree, England with his parents. He was a freeman in 1652, and a townman of Hartford in 1653. On 21 May 1657 the record of the General Court shows: "Mr. Tailcott elected Magistrate." In 1660 and 1661 he served as Deputy to the Court. On 17 May 1660 he was chosen Treasurer of the Colony of Connecticut to succeed his father, and held that office until he resigned in 1676. On 12 May 1664 the General Assembly at Hartford chose him Assistant and Treasurer. On 13 October 1669, Capt. John Talcott was freeman at Hartford on the North the River.
In 1676 he was appointed to command the troops raised for King Philip's War. He was always victorious and obtained great renown as an Indian fighter.
He was one of the patentees named in the Charter granted to the colony by Charles I in 1662. The charter was entrusted to three men for safekeeping: Wylls, Talcott and Allyn. When Sir Edmund Andros sent an agent to procure the Charter, Talcott was one of those who refused to surrender it. This action brought about the famous meeting at which Sir Edmund met with the CT officials at Hartford.
