| When John was 11 months old his father died. His mother died when he was about 8 years of age. John was raised, at least in part, by his uncle and aunt, Dork and Ana Faas of Sheboygan Falls; Ana was the youngest sister of John's father.50 The 1900 U.S. Census shows John, age 17, living in their home and attending school. He graduated from Sheboygan Falls High School in 1900.43 According to John's son William, in 1906 John went to Texas to work on the railroad with a "bridge and building gang.".
