I EDWARD HAGEN of Mount Pleasant Township County of York and Province of Pennsylvania Farmer being Weak in Body but of Sound Mind and Memory Blessed be God This Fourth Day of June Seventeen Hundred and Seventy Nine Make and Publish this my Last Will and Testament in manner following td give to my Wife ELIZABETH HAGAN her Thirds as long as her Widowhood and if She should not Marry till death, and after marriage or death, her Thirds to be equally divided among my children_.(Item) to my Sons HENERY and JOHN and PATRICK and EDWARD and JAMES and DAVID and PETER. I give and bequeath all my Real and Personal Estate with my Wifes Third Part after her Marriage or Deceas Only my Son HENERY is to have one mare none by the Name of Norton, likewise my son PATRICK is the have one horse ______of equal value. August 26, 1779 (Transcribed by Jennifer Nichols) More notes on Patrick McSherry ref.: ref.:website of Karen Grubaugh SEE: excerpted, "McSherrystown/Patrick McSherry" START: "McSherrytown: The fifth town has a history all its own.In 1763, Patrick McSherry (1725-1795) purchased a tract of 300 acres from the Digges family, part of which he laid out in lots of five acres. Did he have in mind at this time nothing more than making available out lots for residents of Hanover, where they could graze their animals and obtain wood? The early deeds for these lots are the only ones from the six towns which contain no requirement that a dwelling house be constructed on them. The first known deed for one of these five-acre lots was datedJune 27, 1765. It recites that the lot being sold ran "along acertain Number of Lots lately laid out by Christian Hoover andthe said Patrick McSherry." Hoover died in 1771 and little isknown of his role in founding this town. Tax lists for 1778 name26 taxables in McSherrystown, not all of whom where necessarily residents, and charge its proprietor for ground rent. PatrickMcSherry may never have lived in his town. In 1765 he was described as a farmer in Mount Pleasant Township. Many of the earliest residents considered themselves Virginians, having previously lived in the Potomac River watershed. Ohio County originally included a western segment of Greene and Washington Counties in Pennsylvania. Monongalia County includedthe remainder of Greene County, a southern section of WashingtonCounty and a western slice of Fayette County, Pennsylvania.Yohogania County, which became extinct less than a decade later, encompassed those parts of Beaver and Allegheny Counties south of the Ohio and Allegheny Rivers, the remainder of Washingtonand Fayette Counties and all of Westmoreland County.
