| At age 14 he joined the GAR, being 6 ft. tall already at that age. But he got smallpox and was left behind by his unit. Eventually he was declared a deserter. In April 1930 congress acted to restore his record to "distinguished service." [interview w/ his granddaughter Anne Ashbaugh Kamrin] Online records at Ancestry.Com say he served in Company I, 5th Regiment of Penna. heavy artillery. He mustered in as a private 25 Aug (or 1 Sep) 1864 and mustered out at Pittsburgh 30 Jun 1865. He was promoted to sergeant 18 Sep 1864. His record credits him with "distinguished service."20 Ruth Frew said they lived at Hyde Park, Pa.4 She (mistakenly?) lists death date as 12 July 1930.4 1880 census of Allegheny, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania (enumerated between brothers William Grinder (age 35) & Andrew Grinder (age 54)): Alexander ASHBAUGH Self M M W 29 PA Occ: Laborer Fa: PA Mo: PA Annie ASHBAUGH Wife F M W 17 PA Occ: Keeping House Fa: PA Mo: PA Morgan D. Ashbaugh, enumerator): Alex's occupation is farm laborer, house owned w/mortgage.19 1910 census lists Alex's job as laborer--odd jobs, house owned free of mortgage.21 1920 census has them on Hyde Park Road in Allegheny Twp; the household consisted of Alex, Annie, Maud & Kenneth.
