Misc. Notes
Johann Eberhard was a follower of George Rapp, leader of a separatist body, who is said to have had two thousand followers in Germany. In 1805 Johann Eberhard moved to America with his wife Juliana, their four surviving children, and his brother Johann Michael. They arrived at Philadelphia on the ship Margaret 26 Aug 1805, and Johann Eberhard became a U.S. citizen on 4 Oct 1813.37

They settled first at Harmonie, Pennsylvania, north of the Ohio River about 20 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. All property was held in common in the name of George Rapp. In 1815 Rapp sold the entire Harmonie property (consisting of 3,000 acres of land and many buildings) for $100,000 and the Rappists moved to New Harmony, Indiana. Johann Eberhard & his wife both died there and are buried in unmarked graves in the Harmonie Cemetery there.37

Many thanks for the Johann Eberhard information. It is indeed good to know
that another family member also settled in the US. I will have to go back to
the family book and see just what the pastor wrote of this man. There were
quite a few Rappists from this area, and they are difficult to trace, as they
were largely ignored in the 'state papers' by the local offcials of both
church and state. Only when their numbers grew, did the local people pay
attention, and eventually, drove them out.

Thanks again,
Brigitte
