| Notes for Richard (Spouse 1) |
"Richard Knight, immigrant ancestor, was a carpenter by trade and lived at Newport, Rhode Island. He was keeper of the prison in 1648-49 and general sergeant in 1648-49-50-53-54-57-58. He was admitted a freeman in 1655. In 1663 he bought lands in Narragansett, and in 1677 he and forty-seven others were granted 100 acres each in a plantation to be called East Greenwich, but he never lived there. He died in 1680. He married Sarah, daughter of James and Mary Rogers. Children: John, Jonathan, David."46
Prior to his arrival in Rhode Island he had lived in Hampton, N.H., where he had a mill as early as 1640. He probably came from Co. Norfolk, England. He was in Newport as early as December 1646.41 On 16 Jan 1648[/9] Richard bought land in Newport from James Rogers.23
Some sources say Richard was a son of William Knight and Elizabeth Carter. If that is true, he probably had brothers John & John, and a sister Thomasine.
Grace K. Ruesink wrote that her Knight ancestors came from England and settled in Connecticut in 1628. To whom was she referring? Perhaps another line?
