Arrived 1632; returned to England 1644.23
Was one of the founders of the town of Dorchester. In 1634 he erected the first gristmill in the area, on the Neponset River. He was a Dorchester representative in the Massachussetts General Court in 1634-35. His pamphlet (1635) urging curtailment of the governor's power was burned, and he was declaired unfit to hold office. However, in 1637 he was elected again to the General Court. That year he also served as a member of the synod that tried Anne Hutchinson, and he led an expedition against the Pequot Indians. In 1643-44 he went to England and became an officer in the parlimentary army.56 |
