| Notes for Elizabeth Lawrence |
| Place of birth may have been Dorchester, Mass. Killed in the Deerfield Massacre. |
| Notes for William (Spouse 1) |
On the death of his mother he was put under the care of John Pope. Pope died 12 Apr 1646, leaving by will "unto William Smead my little boy my loomes and such tacklings as do belong unto them which is to value of 3 Pounds, provided he be willing to dwell with my wife after his time is out. Also provided he be willing to learn my trade, and that there be a comfortable agreement made between them afterwards." In 1660 he was in Northampton, and in 1671 bought Lot 25 at Deerfield.9
His lot in Northampton consisted of eight acres for which he paid 10 shillings. It was located on South Street between Enos Kingsley and Ralph Hutchinson. On October 28, 1675, attacking Indians burned the houses and barns of all three of these men plus those of Preserved Clapp who lived across the road. All four lost everything, houses & contents, and barns with all their crops.21
Another source11 has his marriage either 31 Oct or 31 Dec 1668, but this seems very unlikely given birth dates of his oldest children. |
