Joseph learned the weaver's trade in Edinburgh. In June 1775 he embarked with his family from Greenwich, England, for America. The last of September, after a voyage of 16 weeks they landed at Marblehead, Mass., because the British occupied Boston Harbor at this time. They went first to Londonderry, N.H., then after nine years moved to New Boston, N.H., where they remained eight years before finally moving to Hartland, Vermont.64,65

Another source gives year of emigration as 1774.65

History of the Mackenzie Family as written by Grace Knight Ruesink, 1958.

Joseph Mackenzie was born at Inverness, Scotland in 1735. His wife, Elizabeth Calhoun, was born at Paisley in 1744. In the year 1775 they emigrated to Vermont. At that time the laws of Scotland stated that all real estate and titles should be given to the eldest son. Had Joseph been the eldest son he would have inherited the title of "Sir Charles Monroe" – also lands. They had a son Charles, born 1768, whom the "Sir Charles Monroe" wished to adopt stating that he would never marry and that their son Charles (1768) should be his heir. But instead the parents brought him here with them.

This son married and had a son Charles born 1800 AD. Charles later became engaged to an Ann Hawkins. Charles came to Michigan to find them a home. When he had taken up a piece of land bordering Devils Lake and built a house, he wrote Ann that their home was ready and she came to Lenawee and they were married. She came from a good home in Vermont, so imagine her disappointment in finding that the home her husband had built for her was a small one room structure with dirt floors and few openings. At night the wolves howled outside, and occasionally a passing Indian would thrust his head inside the window opening to see what was going on inside.

When Grandmother saw the home she burst into tears. But she quickly dried her tears and said, "If this is to be my home, I shall try to make it a happy Christian one." They remained there several years, then moved to Adrian, buying land in the region of what is now called McKenzie St (after him). Eight children were born to them. My mother, Frances, was born in 1842.

Years later, Grandfather and one of his sons, Joseph, thought they would like to visit Scotland to learn what had become of the Monroe estate. They did so and were well received by Sir Charles Monroe, his wife and children. On their way home, a big storm came up and their boat began to fill with water. It was feared the boat would sink. A panic ensued. Some men cursed, others fell on their knees and prayed. Their prayers were answered and they arrived safely home. Grandfather brought expensive gifts from the Monroes for each of his eight children.

Frances Mackenzie married Wm Henry Knight in 1867. They had seven children, and lived on the farm until 1908 when they moved to Redlands, California. Death came in 1928 at the age of 86.

In the 1950s brother Charlie's daughter was in Scotland. She went to Inverness hoping to see the castle and estate surrounding it. Learned it was owned by an elderly woman who thought the taxes on the castle beyound her means, so had the castle burned.
