Said to descend from the Mackenzies of Fairburn. Fairburn Tower stands high on a ridge between the Orrin and Conon river valleys and dates from the 16th century. But as early as 1500 there was a Mackenzie house at Fairburn, at that time occupied by Hector Roy, ancestor of the Gairloch family.
