| Notes for John Stebbins [immigrant] |
One source reports birthplace as Bocking, Essex, England, death as occuring 7 Mar 1678 in Northampton.51 Sailed in the Francis from Ipswich in 1634 with parents and three sibs. Of Northampton in 1679.9
Moved to Northampton in 1656 and lived at the lower end of "Pudding Lane", later called Hawley Street. In March 1657/8 he signed the petition to obtain a minister for Northampton. In June 1660 he and Samuel Allen were chosen to the first Highway Committee. Their first work was to establish West Street. In 1661 he was one of six men on the committee to build the second meeting house.21
When he died suddenly in March 1678/9, the manner of his death was considered quite unusual, and the common belief was that he had been killed by witches. Although it is not known who was accused, evidence was sent to the Court of Assistants in Boston. Apparently no further action was taken.21 |
