The family of which Andrew Grinder, of Leechburg, and William Grinder, of Hyde Park, are representatives, was founded in Westmoreland county by Andrew Grinder, who was born east of the Allegheny mountains and was one of the twenty young men who took up government land in Jefferson county, Pennsylvania. While living on this land Mr. Grinder experienced all the perils and hardships of an early settler. After his marriage he resided for some years in Armstrong county, and in 1844 removed to Westmoreland county, settling in Allegheny township, where he purchased three hundred acres of land from Philip Klingensmith. On this property Mr. Grinder engaged in farming and stockraising, vastly improving the land for farming purposes, while beneath the surface might be found three and a half and four feet of coal. The house built by Mr. Grinder on this farm in 1845 is still standing. He was a Whig in politics, and a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. Mr. Grinder married Catharine Reed, and of their ten children the following are living: Andrew, mentioned hereinafter; Peter, Ann Catherine, wife of John M. Baker; Mary, wife of Isaac Novinger; and William, mentioned hereinafter. Mr. Grinder, the father, died in 1880, at which time his land was divided between his sons, Andrew and William.44 The 1850 U.S. census of Allegheny Twp, Westmoreland Co, has (indexed as Grenden): Andrew Grinder 54 Catherine 45 Peter 26 Andrew 23 George 20 Catherine 19 Elizabeth 16 Samuel 13 Jeremiah 12 Mary 8 William 5 and the 1860 US census of the same twp has: Andrew Grinder 67 Catherine 61 Samuel 24 Mary A. 22 Jeremiah 18 William 15 | ||||||||||||||||||
